Besides teaching your parakeet to step up onto your finger and speak, you might try teaching them other tricks such as flying to you on command, putting objects in containers, ring bells, or do somersaults. The best thing to do is to watch your bird and see what he does naturally and then tailor the tricks to your bird. Work with him a few times a day for a few minutes until he gets it. They more easily learn tricks they can do with their beaks than those that require their feet.
Your best bet is to focus on beak tricks instead of claw tricks. Try offering food rewards for things such as climbing ladders, ringing a bell, or spreading his wings. The key to catch them doing something you like and reward them for it. They will soon learn to perform the trick in exchange for the reward.
