Photos spur stimulating dialogue

"We're doing so because it is the only way to make sense of a survey - a discussion, really - in which more than 500 readers shared their views of what we should or should not publish. The Tribune survey was done in cooperation with a national survey of readers conducted by the Associated Press Managing Editors organization. We're placing the survey results in this section because it is more likely to be read by adults who are issue-driven and less likely to be seen by children. In our video age, still photographs remain the most powerful and potentially most controversial means of delivering the news."

"So I'm upstate this evening, talking with a friend and acting mentor of mine, when he shares the following story with the group. Once upon a time, he was given a pet parakeet, and was always curious about how it, and other birds slept. They more or less went into a coma that looked like sleep, but really wasn't, which is basically what actors do. (pause for snickers) So, one day he opened the cage to let the bird fly around a bit, and to his surprise it wouldn't leave the cage. So, he picked it up and set it outside, where it promptly fell over."

Bird IQ Test Takes Flight (Science Daily)
From: us.rd.yahoo.com

"How smart is your parakeet or that crow in the back yard? Ask Dr. Louis Lefebvre, inventor of the world's only comprehensive avian IQ index. His intelligence index is not only separating the featherweights from the big bird brains, it's also providing clues about why some birds make great immigrants, as well as insight into the parallel evolution of primate and bird brains."

Yay! Nail Trimming
From: www.livejournal.com

"Guess what? I trimmed Frankie's nails! I was worried about doing it, since Frankie's not totally tame, but it went great! I wrapped Frankie in a washcloth, with one foot out at a time. Afterwards, Frankie even sat on my lap and arm for a little while and let me scritch his head (maybe he was just still stunned and confused by what I had done to his feet). I had styptic powder on hand, but didn't need to use it. Luckily, the quick is very evident on lutinos."
