Parakeet News & Information for 01-08-2005

Parakeet News from Yahoo.com
Ironic Times - Page Three, July 12, 2004
From: NewsTrove.com
"As usual, the networks experiment with new fare during the summer, when many people are away. Here are some of the shows you'll probably miss:
"Pet Swap" (ABC):
Applying the spouse-swapping concept to pets works just fine when a parakeet is traded for a python, but when a Pomeranian named Eugene changes places with a Chihuahua named Pepe, time grinds to a halt.
"Celebrity Stoolie"
(CBS): If you're a B-list celebrity and your agent calls with an offer from this latest exercise in public humiliation, hang up."
ABSTRACTS OF PAPERS

"Since the end of the year 2000, Israeli poultry farms have been suffering from
H9N2 Israeli avian influenza virus, which has a very strong economic impact.
Today the disease is considered endemic to Israeli poultry farms. The first
isolates were obtained from turkey meat type flocks, from which the disease
passed on to breeding turkeys, then to broilers and heavy breeders, and finally
to laying chickens. It seems that the virus is adapted to infecting several
species, including ostrich, which implies that the host range has changed
between the year 2000 and the present."

"The glass-blue days are those
when every color glows,
each shape and shadow shows.
- Gerard Manley Hopkins
At least six cats called; dogs barked by every tree;
iguanas, goats, lizards in a cage,
spavined horse, then the pot-bellied pig
sniffed our shoes as we hung
from the pasture fence,
and the parakeet flew
room to room, our accompaniment
in the blue house. The smell rose
from plaster walls, from the dirt basement
where bees simmered in a nest, from the dark hole
of the kitchen sink, from the mud room.
It's that pee smell, the realtor said,
but she was wrong."

Parakeet News from NewTrove
Campaigners in a flap over parrots (The Scotsman)
From: us.rd.yahoo.com
"A PAIR of exotic parrots are at the centre of a new wrangle over plans to revive trams in the Capital."
Parakeets fly in to halt tram route (The Herald)
From: us.rd.yahoo.com
"THEY settled in suburbia and have certainly ruffled a few feathers among their neighbours. A pair of exotic parrots with pale green plumage are the newest recruits to a campaign set up to oppose the return of trams to Edinburgh after an absence of almost half a century."
Commentary: You can take these New Year's predictions to the bank (1/3/2005) (Seattle Post-Intelligencer)
From: us.rd.yahoo.com
"What follows are common-sense predictions for 2005, based on mathematical probabilities and Murphy's Law rather than on the spouting of some fortuneteller."

Parakeet Blogs from LiveJournal

"My bird Petey has started biting me really hard. I've had Petey for about three years. He's always been cheerful and friendly (he steps up on my finger, likes to ride around on my shoulder, etc). He had a mirror for a while but he was just sitting in front of it all day and it seemed unhealthy. So I took it out of his cage, and now I only give it to him for an hour a day now. Now--in the absence of the mirror, I think--he has pair bonded (I think) to my finger. He regurgitates food for me all the time and does a little dance. Not that this is a problem, mind you. It's cute, albeit a bit gross. The problem is, he has starting biting me REALLY damn hard. Like piercing the skin. And it's not in fear or anger--I think it's his idea of playing/flirting.
Anyway, I don't know what to do. I will continue to play with him and get him out of his cage (even if my fingers suffer!!) but I'd like to know if there's anything I could do. Or if this is just a stage or something? *shrug* Any advice you have to offer, I will eat it up (and *not* spit it back up as a touching gesture). ;)
(P.S. I'm not sure if Petey is a girl or a boy. His cere is PURPLE!)"
